Annularia is a plant fossil from the Carboniferous Era (approximately 360 to 300 million years ago).  It's radiating structures are most likely the leaves of Calamites.

ST. CLAIR FOSSIL FERN
from ST. CLAIR, PA

Plant fossils were found in the Llewellen Formation and are Pennsylvanian Period (approx. 300 million years old).  This is one of the few places these white (sometimes yellow) ferns on black shale are found.  The plant tissued was slowly replaced by PYRITE which was later replaced by PYROPHYLLITE.  Most commonly found are Alethopteris, Neuropteris, Pecopteris, and Sphenophyllum.
