ST. CLAIR FOSSIL FERN

Plant fossils were found in the Llewellen Formation and are Pennsylvanian Period (approx. 300 million years old). This is one of the few places these white (sometimes yellow) ferns on black shale are found. The plant tissued was slowly replaced by PYRITE which was later replaced by PYROPHYLLITE. Most commonly found are Alethopteris, Neuropteris, Pecopteris, and Sphenophyllum.
